Features
of The Silent Timer™
The
Silent Timer™'s features and functions are explained below:
| Completely
silent! |
< |
THE
SILENT TIMER™ is incapable of emitting sound. You can use
THE
SILENT TIMER™ knowing
that it will not distract others or create disturbances.
Because
of its inability to make noise, THE
SILENT TIMER™ is
perfect for studying in the library or for test day. Some tests, however,
do not allow timing devices into the testing centers. Learn the rules
of your test before test day so you know what to expect.
THE
SILENT TIMER™ is
an invaluable practice tool, allowing you to become familiar with
the restraints you'll face on test day. Even if you can't bring it
into your test, you'll have months of studying with it under your
belt.

| Alerts
with a flashing light |
< |
 |
THE
SILENT TIMER™ has a tiny, red LED light in the upper left-hand corner.
This LED light flashes to alert you instead of emitting sound.
The light flashes at three preset intervals:
- halfway through
your test,
- after each
question time is up,
- and from one
minute down to zero continuously.

| Stand
up on desk or lay flat |
< |
On
the back of THE
SILENT TIMER™ is an extendable
kickstand. When extended, the kickstand sits the timer upright
on the desk or table, at a slight angle.
You
can also close the kickstand and lay it flat on your desk. |

| Preset
Test Buttons |
< |
To
make THE
SILENT TIMER™ easier
and quicker to use, we added four preset test buttons for the major
tests: ACT, LSAT, MCAT,
and SAT. Each button
stores the times that are on that test. These buttons are used to quickly
enter the correct time for your test. So, if you are taking one of
these exams, you will never have to use our keypad to enter in your
test time, or remember how much time you should enter. Your test times
are stored in our memory!
The times
stored into the timer's memory are the following:
Test |
Stored
Times |
|
35m,
45m, 1h |
|
35m,
30m |
|
1h
40m, 1hr 25min, 30m |
|
20m,
25m, 35m |
To recall the times
from memory, all you need to do is press "TIME", then press
your corresponding test's memory button. By pressing the test button
repeatedly, you rotate through each time for your test.
Remember, you can
also store special times into memory for easy recall.

THE
SILENT TIMER™ also
comes with two fully programmable memory buttons: MEM1 and MEM2.
For each button you can store a test time and number of questions
combination. So, if you know your test will be 1 hour long and
have 70 questions, you can easily program this custom information
into the timer. The timer remembers this information, so next time
you sit down to take your test, you can recall from memory without
re-entering!

| Count
Down and Count Up |
< |
Unlike
some kitchen timers and other digital timers, THE
SILENT TIMER™ can
be set to count up or count down. Some students like to know how much
time they have remaining, while others want to see how far they've
gone. You can easily switch modes while time is running, depending
on which view you want.

| Calculate
time per question |
< |
One
of the most unique features of THE
SILENT TIMER™ is
its ability to display the time per question. The timer takes the total
time you have to take your test and divides it by the number of questions
you have. It arrives at your "average time per question". This value
tells you that if you spent that exact amount of time on EACH question,
you will finish answering your questions on time. When working through
your test, you press the red button on top of the timer, to tell the
timer that you have moved on to the next question.
Its easier to explain with
an example:
Let's say
you have 35 minutes to answer 25 questions. You input these values
into the timer, and it computes that, on average, you have 1:24
to answer each question. If you finish all 25 questions in 1:24
or less - you will finish the test on time.
But what if
you come across a really difficult questions? Harder questions
might take longer than 1:24. Say that on the first question,
you spend 3 minutes answering - a full 1:36 seconds longer than
the allotted 1:24. After you press the red button, the timer
now reads that you have 1:20 to answer each question. The extra
1:36 seconds is subtracted from the total time, and then divided
among the remaining 24 questions.
|
 |
This means that the
longer you take on questions, you will lose time on the rest. It also
works in the reverse. Going faster than the initial average time per
question will increase the time you have on the remaining questions. The point of this
feature is to give you an idea of how your time should be spent throughout
your test.
Using this feature
in practice will prepare you for the time pressures of test day.

| Auto
Mode |
< |
Auto
Mode is an advanced mode that is related to the time per
question.
When Auto Mode is activated, the timer automatically advances to the
next question, so you do not have to press the red button. This mode
is really great for students who are generally very comfortable with
their time, but still would like to know about where they should be
in their test.

| Passage
Mode |
< |
Passage
Mode is an advanced mode that allows you to track how much time you
spend reading passages and how much time you spend answering questions.
How it works is that you enter the total time you have to answer that
particular section of the test. Then you input into THE
SILENT TIMER™ how
many reading passages you have, how much time you want to spend reading
each passage, and how many questions you have to answer. The timer
then calculates your time per question based on the amount of time
you have remaining after reading the passages.
This
mode is much better illustrated with an example:
Let's say you
are taking a 45-minute test. You have four reading passages and
a total of 28 questions to answer. You decide to spend 4 minutes
and 30 seconds reading each passage. (How much time you want to
spend reading depends on your personal preferences and what is
recommended for your test.)
Passage |
Time

Questions
to Answer |
#1 |
4:30 |
7 |
#2 |
4:30 |
8 |
#3 |
4:30 |
6 |
#4 |
4:30 |
7 |
Spending 4:30
on each passage means you are spending 18 minutes out of your 45-minute
test reading the passage. The remaining time (27 minutes) is divided
among the 28 questions, yielding an average time of 58 seconds
per question.
If you finish
a reading passage one minute early, that extra minute is added
to the original 27 minutes, and divided among any remaining questions.
Same goes for the time saved when finishing a question early.
The idea is that
as you answer your questions, your SILENT
TIMER™ will
continually update to tell you how much time you have to answer
your questions. Taking too long in the beginning will decrease
your per question time from 58 seconds. Finishing quickly adds
more time.
Practice
with this mode a few times, and you will get the hang of it. If you
still have questions about this mode, please email us.

| Clock |
< |
One
of the features of THE
SILENT TIMER™ is
the clock. The time is displayed in the 12-hour format with "AM" and "PM" icons
shown accordingly. The timer can be left in Clock Mode (where you can
see it constantly), and the clock can also be viewed while time is
running with the single press of a button.
